The sports comedy show ‘Chad Powers’ wraps up season 1 with a surprising plot twist. When he manages to weasel himself into the Catfish football team as the dorky quarterback Chad Powers, Russ Holliday is able to carry on the act for several games. But, it’s a string of one step too many that ultimately exposes his two-faced secret to Ricky, Coach Hudson’s assistant and daughter. This could very well mark the conclusion of Russ’ fraudulent masquerade. Still, he pulls off saving his skin by telling the coach that the team’s future and her father’s reputation have as much to lose as he does if the truth about Powers gets out. So, after getting an advantage and a new enemy, Russ/Chad once again goes undercover with the Catfish in the field. Of course, such a sudden ending is likely to make the fans eagerly wait for a continuation. However, there is no official announcement yet about the renewal of the Hulu series. If it is indeed approved for a second season soon, the show will be able to come back to the screen sometime in 2027.
Chad Powers Season 2: Following the Football Season for the Catfish
Although it is not known for sure if “Chad Powers” will be continued for a second season, a rumor about a renewal has been circulating for a while. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that a calendar for filming the second season of the Hulu series was located, with January 5, 2026, as the starting date. It is implied that the information source is the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 479. The labor union is very active in productions that are happening in Georgia, which, by the way, is the main filming location of the show. So, if we take this news as an indication, a new season will only be a matter of time before it will be officially confirmed. Actually, Glen Powell and Michael Waldron, the show creators, came up with the idea of the script as their long-term project from the very beginning.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Waldron was candid about his hopes for a theoretical sequel: “The show has got to live or die on how it performs but everyone knows that Glen (Powell) and I want this ‘Chad Powers’ possibility in the future. There is so much more story to tell I hope we get the chance. However, by the closing of season one we haveneven left stride. This is now our Empire Strikes Back book of this trilogy, and this three-book unit that started with Ricky has also pulled him into the alliance. “Hopefully we can keep it going. The creator had said before that he ideally wanted the whole story to take place within a single college football season. So season 2 will probably open with the cliffhanger: Catfish vs. Bulldogs and follow as the team works through a football season.
Chad Powers Season 2: Retaining the Core Cast and Their Dynamics
Being a comedy-driven and premise-based series, ‘Chad Powers’ discovers its primary narrative power through its characters. The first season end sees the TV series differentiating Russ and his surroundings well enough to not only create interesting relationships and interactions but also to have a strong narrative base. Consequently, it is quite probable that the series will decide to keep this intact for its next season without any significant changes. So, the main ensemble featuring Glen Powell (Russ Holliday/Chad Powers), Perry Mattfeld (Ricky), Frankie A. Rodriguez (Danny), Steve Zahn (Coach Hudson), and Wynn Everett (Tricia) is most likely going to be the continuation of their characters if there is a second season.
Similarly, those who are not on the football field but share close ties with the show’s lead characters, such as Mike Holliday (Toby Huss) and Wendy Hudson (Megan Ketch), may also make a return. Instead, the Catfish team behind them are the characters we’d expect to return as starters on the field or guides from the sidelines. This extends to additions like Quentin Plair’s Coach Byrd, Clayne Crawford’s Coach Scott Dobbs and Colton Ryan as the quarterback, Gerry Cheevers. Finally, there’s plenty of space for other, as yet-unintroduced players to be added into the central narrative with a new season.
Season 2: Exploring the Complex Relationship Between Russ, Chad, and Ricky
After the first season comes to a close, the possibility of Chad Powers having a complicated and interesting personal life during his college football career is highly likely. In the beginning, Ricky upon hearing about the outrageous secret of the player, feels that she has been cheated and is emotionally devastated. Besides Russ faking a friendship with her, he has also messed up things a lot with Ricky’s family because of his involvement. However, when she attempts to stop his act by warning him that she will disclose his secret, Russ instead confronts her with a different argument. He tells her that if Chad’s secret gets out to everyone, it will be the end of Coach Hudson’s career which is already going downhill. Hence, she has a lot more to lose than he does. Consequently, the quarterback is allowed to come back to the game with Ricky being his unwilling accomplice.
This is the story in an exciting way staring a new relationship. Up to now, Russ’ only partner Danny, has been a friend and a well-wisher to the player. So, it looks like mixing Ricky with this trio is a sure way to a tasty disaster. In addition, as Russ continues to lie, he is making it more difficult for his future self to get out of this mess. All this detail and development may become a major theme of the second season. However, as the show goes on with another season, the audience will also find more meta references and easter eggs. For example, Glen Powell has already declared his intention to give a cameo to his old school, the University of Texas at Austin, if ‘Chad Powers’ comes back for another season.
